Riley had just turned 10 years old, so she wanted to have a say in her shoot and have some fun!  Her mom was great and let Riley have total say in her shoot! It was all about what she wanted! Only requirement from mom was that we incorporated the number 10 into the shoot somehow! Riley is an avid reader , loves anything country and thinks graffiti is cool.  Her shoot took place all over the west side of Kauai. It was so much fun!! This shoot well… it’s a little bit country, little bit girly and a little bit grunge all rolled into one!

It was a beautiful morning on Kauai!  I really enjoyed spending the morning photographing this family! The parents were so in love and patient with the kids, the girls were so pleasant and well behaved.  Everyone seemed to really enjoy each others company.  It was a calm and easy shoot for me, since the girls really did everything I asked…which yes, is very rare in children’s photography!  Here is a small preview into their family photo session. What is Girl’s Day!?

Well I asked myself the same question my first year living in Hawaii.  I have learned a lot about the custom in my time here and have been to friends homes for Girl’s Day celebrations where the families set up the most beautiful altars of amazing handcrafted wooden dolls, drank sake, ate arare and yummy mochi and simply celebrated their girls.  The custom derived from Japan and the custom of displaying dolls began during the Heian period.  Girl’s Day traces its origins to an ancient Japanese custom called hina-nagashi.

Although I am not Japanese, and I have yet to get my daughter an actual Japanese wooden doll, they tend to be very pricy, we usually observe the custom by having a Girl’s Day of our own

So no matter where you’re from or what nationality you are, give your girl a big hug today and let her know you celebrate her!

Jelly belly jelly beans & a day of sunshine!  The two things I think of when I think of this family shoot! The kids would do just about anything for a Jelly Belly …hey if your a mom, you know you do what ever it takes! The Garden Isle of Kauai has had a lot of rain this winter but the sun came out & showed it’s face for our  family photo shoot this afternoon.   Here are a few from this fun afternoon of silly faces and jelly beans.

It’s always so much fun to photograph your friends!  This shoot was extra special because I love this family…in many ways they are my family! Although we are not blood related, these guys are always there for us when we need and I was so excited when Jes asked me to photograph them.

I stumbled upon this location while on a walk with my daughter, I said to her “oh man…I want to do a boy shoot here!” I loved all the old bottles and vintage boxes and frames…if you just looked around props are everywhere I didn’t need much but my imagination on this shoot!  Thanks guys for letting me do something a little different in a dusty location not everyone would be eager to use. Enjoy!

Nesbitt, was an old soda made in Lihue, Kauai back in the day…kinda cool to stumble upon this little slice of Kauai history.
